TEXT:
Howell, D.C. (1997). Statistical Methods for Psychology (4th ed).
Belmont, CA: Duxbury.
OBJECTIVES:
This course is designed to enrich the student's knowledge and understanding of
the statistical method as it pertains to the design and analysis of experiments in
the behavioral sciences. Specifically, at the end of the semester a student should
be able to read and intelligently assess most of the research literature in his or
her own particular field. The student will learn to recognize and understand the
common themes that reoccur throughout the variety of designs presented. Also, at the
end of the semester, a student should be able to apply the statistical designs
presented in the course to his or her own research studies.
REQUIREMENT:
A ten-digit scientific calculator.
EVALUATION:
The course grade will be based on three components: a mid-term examination, a final
examination, and written hand-in assignments. The examinations will consist of
problems and short-answer questions designed to tap both computational and conceptual
skills. The examinations are open-book and open-note. The weighting of the three
components will be as follows: mid-term examination, 30%; final examination, 40%; and
assignments, 30%. Classroom attendance is mandatory except for emergency situations.
