Reasons to Join Active Directory

  • Administrative tasks reduced --
Reduces the number of routine administrative tasks you perform.  Sharing or hiding a resource becomes as simple as setting ACL's.

  • High-availability --
The 4 Domain Controllers running Active Directory have UPS backup, RAID storage, climate control, dual network interface cards, dual power supplies, and more.  Plus, they are located in centralized core networking areas.

  • Single-sign-on --
Accounts are automatically created and deleted when users enter and leave the University as students, faculty, or staff.  Passwords are routinely synchronized with LDAP.

  • Resource administration --
Local administrators maintain full control over their resources.  Additionally, with a request to the AD System Administrators, applications and services can be installed at the domain level.

  • Other Reasons --

    • Application publishing

    • Distributed file system

    • Sharing resources

    • Nesting groups

    • Group policy

    • Startup/Shutdown scripts (logon/logoff scripts)

    • Directory services -- storing resources  (ie: searching for resources)

    • Collaboration
