Illinois State University and Illinois Wesleyan University are proud to host Ken Burns, award-winning documentary filmmaker, as part of the Stevenson Lecture Series on November 1, 2007.
Burns has directed and produced some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made and has been named one of the “most influential documentary makers” of all time. His documentaries include information on Mark Twain, the Civil War, baseball, Lewis and Clark, jazz, and Frank Lloyd Wright, among others.
His 2005 documentary, Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson, a two-part film on the life of the first African-American heavyweight boxing champion, won three Primetime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Nonfiction Special, Outstanding Writing for Nonfiction, and Outstanding Voice-over Performance. His television series, The Civil War, was the highest rated series in the history of American Public Television.
Burns is also working on two major film series: the American experience in the Second World War, and a history of our National Parks.
