Essay Assignment

You are required to write an essay in which you examine why you think Latin America is poor and what can be done about it. You are expected and required to make use of Galeano in the writing of the essay, as well as Keen, other readings, lectures, class discussions, films, etc. Black's essay which is on reserve in Milner Library, "Introduction: The Evolution of Latin American Studies" in Latin America, Its Problems and Its Promise, may help you think through different schools of thought on this subject. You may also use outside material, although you are not required or expected to do so. I am also willing to go over ideas, rough drafts, and outlines with you.

Your essay should be about three to five pages (750-1250 words) long, typed, double-spaced, follow proper essay form, and include footnotes and a bibliography. Be sure to proofread the essay for spelling, grammatical, and typographical errors. Consult this guide on "The Writing of a Historical Essay or Research Paper" for additional assistance on the form of the paper. Essays are due in class on the last day of class (Thursday, August 6), and I will grade them based on content, organization, clarity of thought, and level of argument. Absolutely no late papers will or can be accepted.
