Latino Psychology

Exam #3 Review Sheet

Exam 3 will cover all lectures, readings, guest speakers, and videos shown in class from November 6 through December 6. Exam will be essay questions.  I will be asking questions that ask you to apply your knowledge as well as conceptual and factual questions.  The following is just a guideline of what types of topics you should know for the exam.  Do not just memorize definitions but know how to apply the concepts and give examples of them. 

Schooling and Achievement

• What are the different types of learning/education that can take place and how do they differ in terms of motivation, social relations, organization and methods of instruction?
• What is the “achievement gap” and what have been some of the explanations given for this gap?  What does the research say about the validity of each of these explanations?
• Is achievement related to independence from family?  For who?
• How do Mexican descent adolescents compare to European-American adolescents in terms of motivation and attitudes toward school?
• How does inequality and perception of inequalities influence the academic motivation and achievement of Latino students?

Media Portrayals of Latinos and its Impact

• What are the theories of media effects?  How do they consider media influence people?
• What is recognition vs. respect?  Are Latinos recognized?  How has this changed Respected?  How has this changed? 
• What are the stereotypes of Latinos in the media? 
• How important is Spanish-language television to Latinos?
• What are the perceptions of Latino youth regarding ethnic and gendered portrayals on TV?
• How is TV watching related to well-being of Latino youth?

Latino Mental Health

• What are the prevalence rates of mental disorders among Latinos?  Know and understand differences in rates by country of origin, immigrant generation, acculturation, gender, etc.
• What are culture-specific syndromes?  Examples
• Why are Latinos underutilizing mental health services?
• What influences Latinos’ intentions to seek mental health care?
• What are examples of mental health services that have worked with Latino clients?  What factors need to be considered when creating mental health services for Latinos?

Religion and Spirituality

• What are the religious affiliations of Latinos?  Know the numbers.  What role does immigrant generation and acculturation play?
• What is the demographic shift in Latino religious affiliation?
• How religious are Latinos?
• What is the role of renewalism in Latino religious ideologies?
• How many Latinos have converted religious affiliations?  What reasons do they give for conversion?
• What are Latino-oriented churches and who goes to them?
• What is the role of religion on Latinos’ political attitudes and behavior?
• What role does religion play in other attitudes?
• What role does religion play as a risk factor or protective factor in Latinos’ lives?
• What role does religion play in Latino families who have children with developmental delays?
