Overview

In this course we will explore the issues of diversity related to the study and practice of psychology.  Using a cultural psychology approach, we will explore the meaning of culture and how it relates to different groups within the United States.  We will focus on diversity, broadly defined, focusing on the study of race, ethnicity, language, gender, social class, sexual orientation, religion, and disabilities.

Learning Objectives

bulletTo understand the concepts, theories, methods, and major perspectives related to cultural psychology.
bulletTo increase sensitivity to the voices of diverse (and often disenfranchised) groups.
bulletTo gain the ability to evaluate critically the appropriateness and consequences of traditional Western psychological theory, research, and practice to culturally diverse populations.
bulletTo understand diverse populations including distinct characteristics and variability in these characteristics
bulletTo improve your ability to critically read and evaluate research on issues of diversity in psychology.
bulletTo develop your research and presentation skills.

Attendance:  Class attendance and active participation each week are required

Academic Integrity and Misconduct:  You are expected to do your own work. Cheating, plagiarism, or forgery will not be tolerated. Instances of academic misconduct will result in a grade of “F” in the course and referral to the Student Judicial Office for appropriate disciplinary action. For definitions of cheating and plagiarism, see page 63 of the 2003-2004 Illinois State University Undergraduate Catalog.

Organization: We will meet twice a week.  Class sessions will consist of brief lectures on the background and context of the assigned readings, and class discussion and evaluation of the readings.  You will each co-lead a class session on a topic of your choice.  I hope we have lively debates about the substance of cultural psychology and issues of diversity within psychology and much discussion about the methodology of research in this area.
