Course Requirements

There will be a total of 300 points possible in this course.  Grades on writing assignments will reflect the quality of your ideas and the quality of your writing, including grammar and spelling.  Assignments and point values are described below.  Letter grades will be determined in the following manner: A = 269-300; B = 239-268; C = 209-238; D = 179 - 208; F = 178 and under.  Please note that these grades are determined by points, not by percentages.

There will be no extensions, make-ups, or rewrites permitted on assignments.  Assignments must be turned in at the beginning of class on the due dateE-mailed assignments will NOT be accepted.

Please use the contents of the syllabus as a guideline.  You are responsible for knowing any changes that are announced during class.  Please check website often as announcements may be posted there as well.

Readings: Assigned readings for each week are listed at the end of this syllabus. Please complete the readings prior to each topic. Some lecture material will be based on these readings, and we will often discuss the readings in class. Also, the exams will cover material presented in these readings. You can find the readings online at Milner Library’s electronic reserve page.

Participation and Attendance (25 points)  All students are expected to come to class prepared to discuss and apply the readings.  Periodically, in-class assignments will be given and collected.  These may include group projects, quizzes, and class discussion.  There are no make-ups, re-writes, or extensions accepted on these assignments.  If you are absent on a day that an in-class project was assigned you will lose the points.

Thought Papers (10 points each, 50 points total)  You will be expected to write a 1-2 page (typed, double-spaced) reaction paper on five of the assigned class readings.  I do not want a summary of the article.  Instead, what I am looking for is critical thinking of the piece. For example, what did you think of the methodology used to answer the research question?  Was it appropriate?  How could you improve this study?  What would be the next step to this study if you were asked to do research in this area?  What are the implications of the findings?  What does it mean for adolescents?  What does it mean for how we should treat adolescents?  Each paper will be due on the Tuesday of the week the article is assigned.  For example, if you want to write a reaction on readings on immigration, it would be due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, August 28.  Remember, you have to write papers on five of these readings so plan ahead!

Exams (75 points each, 225 points total)  In order to help you meet the learning objectives listed above, there will be three exams administered throughout the semester. Each exam may consist of multiple choice, short answer and essay questions. Although the focus on each exam will be on the material covered during that section of the course, some concepts, topics, and ideas will be covered across sections and thus exams may cover material from other sections of the course.  Each exam will cover all material, including the required readings, class lectures, and videos. The dates for these exams are listed below in the schedule of reading assignments.
