History & Social Science Freshmen Transition Seminar - 2007/2008
Welcome to the History & Social Science Freshmen Transition seminar web site. The seminar is designed to provide incoming freshmen in the History, History Teacher Education, and Social Sciences Education majors with a means to more fully connect to their peers, their major, and the University. The seminar provides these students with the opportunity to develop personal relationships: with other students in their major, with advisement staff in University College Advisement and their department, and with other faculty and staff in the major. It provides student participants with a means to ask questions and receive important information regarding their first year, their major, the department, the University, and their future via weekly meeting times and discussions.
How it works: We meet each week in the Fall semester and once a month or so in the Spring. Participants who come to the seminar regularly are guaranteed seats in the 100 level required courses (HIS 135, HIS 136, HIS 101. and HIS 102). These courses are required of all History and Social Science Education majors. You will not receive a grade nor credit for participation in the seminar. However, you will receive credit and a grade for the linked HIS 135/101, HIS 102/136 class. You also receive encouragement and full engagement in your major via your regular participation. Reminder: you need to be sure to keep the designated seminar time available in your schedule to participate as it will not appear on you schedule. Talk with your University College Advisor or departmental advisor if you are interested in participating in this great opportunity.
Benefits of participation:
~Friendships that go beyond simple classroom acquaintances.
~Real relationships with your advisors in AAC as well as your department and departmental advisors, staff and faculty.
~A more cohesive education within the larger framework of the University - brings you the benefits of a small school feeling with a large school experience.
~A real understanding of the reasons you should feel committed to your major and why your major is committed to you.
~A more complete understanding of what you can expect from your major and what your major department expects of you - including information regarding certification and employment after you receive your degree.
~Much more!
