Forecasting Journals/Organizations
Journals
Many of the standard forecasting principles uncovered in research have not appeared in forecasting textbooks (Cox and Loomis 2001). Therefore it is necessary to examine the forecasting literature in order to supplement textbook coverage and provide students with a well-rounded knowledge of forecasting. Three main journals in the field of forecasting are the International Journal of Forecasting, the Journal of Forecasting and the Journal of Business Forecasting.
The Journal of Business Forecasting is more practitioner-oriented, "written in an easy-to-understand style for business executives and managers." As such, it is easy for even beginning students to use and understand articles from this journal.
The International Journal of Forecasting "publishes high quality refereed papers covering all aspects of forecasting. Its objective is to unify the field, and to bridge the gap between theory and practice. The intention is to make forecasting useful and relevant for decision and policy makers who need forecasts." Many articles would be accessible to the average student.
The Journal of Forecasting is "an international journal that publishes refereed papers on forecasting. It is multidisciplinary, welcoming papers dealing with any aspect of forecasting: theoretical, practical, computational and methodological. A broad interpretation of the topic is taken with approaches from various subject areas, such as statistics, economics, psychology, systems engineering and social sciences, all encouraged." Articles from this journal are usually more helpful to the professor than the student. Reading these journals would give the teacher a wider view of the field of forecasting.
